Seven San Diego technology companies netted honors
yesterday at the 11th annual San Diego High Tech Awards presented by the AeA,
the industry association formerly known as the American Electronics
Association.
Winners ranged from semiconductor distributor Memec,
with $1 billion in sales, to network hardware maker Tarari, with less than
$5 million in sales. About 500 people attended the awards event at the
Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla.
The AeA handed out honors in several categories.
Tarari won in the Emerging Growth group. Founded by former executives of
IPivot, which was acquired by Intel for $500 million about in 1999, Tarari
makes content processors that relieve Internet traffic bottlenecks on
networks.
The 40-employee company has raised more than $28
million in venture capital and expects to be profitable by 2005, said Liz
Fraumann, director of marketing.
Kintera, a publicly traded firm that makes software
for nonprofit organizations, took the top honor in the Software/Internet
category. Memec, which has filed documents with federal regulators for an
initial public stock sale, took home the award in the Technology Services
group.
Other winners were: Driving monitor DriveCam Systems,
network technology provider Path 1 Networks, chip developer Peregrine
Semiconductor and medical device maker Digirad Corp.
Finalists for the awards, by industry, were:
- Software/Internet: Active Network, BakBone
Software, Captiva Software, DivXNetworks and St. Bernard Software.
- Computer: cVideo, Verari Systems and Streamload.
- Communications Products: HM Electronics, ITech and
Wireless Facilities.
- Technology/Services: Maxim Systems and Technology
Integration Group.
- Semiconductors/Instrumentation: Elgar, Figure 8
Wireless and Hardy Instruments.
- Medical Devices: Accelrys, IntraLuminal
Therapeutics and Resmed.
- Emerging Growth: Akonix Systems, MIR 3, V-enable
and Vektrex Electronics.
