Vektrex created a special SpikeSafe 200 to be used to test squibs (explosive bolts) that are used to release
satellites. These squibs must be tested on the ground prior to launch to
ensure they will work properly in space. The test required a total of four squibs to be fired in a specific sequence to avoid too much mechanical
shock for the payload. A key requirement was the leakage current allowed in
the off state -- less than 50uA.
To meet this requirement
Vektrex configured a standard 8 channel SpikeSafe to operate as 4 10A
channels. A special Windows control program was also developed; this allowed
all current source parameters to be programmed from a remote laptop via
Ethernet control
