The evolution in packaged LEDs drives the need for a revised LM-80 device testing standard. The IES LM-80 standard has been vital for the fast uptake of high-power white LEDs and applications such as general illumination. Indeed this device testing standard allows product developers to fairly compare components from different vendors and to make a sound judgment on LED specification for solid-state lighting (SSL) products. But the growth in the LED and SSL sectors has driven tremendous evolution in packaged LED technology and products. This evolution has led the IES to make a major revision to LM-80 to address an increasingly broader range of LED components. The new standard will cover monochromatic LEDs, LEDs designed for AC or high-voltage drive, and other popular LED variants.

This webcast, presented by Dr Jianzhong Jiao of Osram Opto Semiconductors and Jeff Hulett, CTO of Vektrex who served as the Technical Coordinator of LM-80 Working Group in IES, describe the changes and is timed to be near coincident with the release of the new LM-80 document.

The presentation covered:

  • The basic changes implemented in the LM-80 standard.
  • The philosophy and reasoning behind the range of devices covered and the methodology adopted.
  • The plan of the IES to manage the LM-80 and TM-21 documents in a cohesive and symbiotic manner and to place parameters such as test duration and sample size in the appropriate document.
  • The new version of LM-80 has gone through the accreditation process to become an ANSI standard, and it is potentially establishing the work as a global standard.
