Continuous-wave (CW) laser characterization measures the stable, uninterrupted optical output of a laser. CW sweep measurements are simple with Vektrex SMU. With Vektrex SMU, duplicate the CW sweep using existing instrumentation then expand beyond current (>1A) and voltage limitations (>10V). Unlike instruments with duty-cycle limitations, the SMU’s Continuous Power Conversion feature allows CW sweeps up to the SMU’s full current capability.
CW Sweep with Measured Current vs Measured Voltage

The new Staircase Sweep current mode steps current through a user-defined range, maintaining continuous current throughout the sweep—often called CW operation. Sweep timing is hardware-based, with programmable step duration and a trigger at each step to synchronize external equipment. The SMU’s digitizer precisely measures voltage or current over a user-defined window within each step. This repeatable timing helps prevent artificial kinks in laser L-I-V plots caused by inconsistent step durations or measurement timing.
Staircase Sweep mode also makes it easy to match curves obtained with older-generation SMUs. Users can qualify a test setup using familiar CW sweeps, then switch to pulsed sweeps to benefit from reduced junction heating.
