SMU Force Sense Selector Switch


Overview

The Vektrex Pulsed Source Measure Unit (PSMU) Force Sense Selector Switch is an optional accessory that combines two essential capabilities into one seamless component: an integrated connect/disconnect switch and an A/B switch function. This option is available with all Vektrex SMU models.

Streamlining Production With Connect/Disconnect Function

The connect/disconnect function utilizes a fully isolated switching architecture that rapidly disconnects power from the device under test (DUT). This eliminates additional control steps, streamlines test sequences, and improves overall throughput. 

In practice, the user benefits include

  • Connect the PSMU to the device under test when ready to source current and measure voltage.
  • Disconnect the DUT electrically when changing devices, moving the probe point, adjusting the setup, or protecting the DUT.
  • Increase efficiency by eliminating the need to enable and disable current
  • Isolate the DUT between tests so the instrument is not actively connected.
  • Reduce cable handling, which helps avoid wiring mistakes and wear on connectors.
  • Improve safety and repeatability, especially in production or automated test setups.

The connect/disconnect function fully isolates the DUT from the source/measure path when the switch is open.

Instrument Integration With A/B Switch Function

The A/B switch function enables secondary instruments to share existing load wiring and be selectively switched into the measurement path as needed.

According to Vektrex CTO, “Many test systems rely on specialized instrumentation for ultra-low current and reverse-voltage measurements. While these measurements are important, they typically represent only a small portion of the overall test process. With a wide variety of specialized instruments already deployed in production environments, the A/B switching capability simplifies integration and system upgrades while enabling higher current operation, faster pulsing, and improved measurement performance.”

With this setup, one can achieve the best of both worlds. The Vektrex SMU provides high power, fast pulses and improved measurements; while other instruments provide low current, low voltage, and current leakage measurements.

The Force Sense Selector Switch is a true mechanical switch integrated in the Vektrex SMU, as opposed to solid state or software switch found in other devices. For existing systems, it is possible to integrate this feature to an existing SMU all while retaining the existing software and load wiring.
